Climate Change Underwater VR Simulation

Virtual Reality Experience on Climate Change Awareness

Service
Atlyx developed a virtual reality experience designed to educate users about the devastating impact of climate change on marine ecosystems. This immersive VR project takes users on a journey beneath the Great Barrier Reef, exploring the ocean from 1940 to 2040, highlighting both the vibrant life it once held and the challenges it faces today.Through interactive design, AI-guided narration, and 3D visuals, the VR experience transforms scientific data into an emotional, educational journey, inspiring users to engage with environmental sustainability.

Tools and Technology Used

  • Unity 3D & C# – VR environment building, interactions, and time mechanics
  • VR SDKs (Oculus / HTC Vive) – Headset and controller support
  • Cinema 4D & Substance Painter – 3D modeling, texturing, and lighting
  • Adobe After Effects – Post-processing and visual polish
  • Ricoh Theta – Early spatial prototyping
  • Figma / Notion – Workflow management and ideation

Project Overview – Turning Awareness into Immersion

The objective was clear: transform climate science into experience.
Rather than relying on static facts or conventional educational content, Atlyx designed a fully interactive VR narrative that lets users travel between 1940 and 2040 to see, feel, and understand the effects of human induced change on oceanic life.

From coral bleaching to the loss of seagrass habitats, the story unfolds visually blending art direction, scientific storytelling, and VR innovation to make environmental education unforgettable.

Design Inspiration – When Gaming Meets Purpose

Inspired by the immersive storytelling of Subnautica, this project mirrors that emotional depth while adding a real world impact layer.

The design direction combines volumetric lighting, underwater dynamics, and cinematic soundscapes to create an atmosphere that feels alive and fragile.

The result is not just a simulation, but a story of survival and stewardship, designed to help users connect emotionally with the consequences of inaction.

The Experience – Explore, Interact and Transform

Users begin inside a futuristic underwater research station, guided by an AI voice assistant.
They can interact with educational elements, travel through time, and take part in hands-on restoration tasks such as planting seagrass or unlocking environmental data through interactive controls.

  • AI Narration & Information Boards – Voice-guided storytelling that enhances accessibility and engagement.

  • Diving Gear Activation – Players equip virtual gear to explore deeper ocean zones and restore lost habitats.

  • Environmental Interaction – Planting seagrass, opening gates, and observing the ecosystem’s health in real time.

  • Time Travel Mechanic – Transition between 1940 and 2040, showing the contrast between abundance and collapse. a visual metaphor for urgency and hope.
